The Orthodox Liturgy and Daily Prayers in a Hebrew Translation

Jacob Barclay (tr.), The Orthodox Liturgy and Daily Prayers in a Hebrew Translation. Jerusalem: The Ecumenical Theological Research Fraternity in Israel, September 2006.

The book is the result of more than forty years of work on the side of the translator and nearly three years of processing the material for publication jointly by the translator and the ETRFI.

For the first time, a book offers the Hebrew translation from the Greek of the three Divine Liturgies of St. James, St. Chrysostom and St. Basil ; the Prayers of the Hours, Evening and Morning Prayers, the Akathistos Hymn, the Athanasian and Nicene Creeds. A detailed introduction elucidates method and rationale of the translation. Two glossaries of more than two hundred and sixty words offer easy access to the study of the Hebrew renditions of key Christian Greek terms employed in this work. The significance and utility of the translation is evident for all who pray the Liturgy in the Hebrew vernacular, to professors and students of liturgy and to the Israeli tour guide or journalist who is challenged to explain to the Israeli public, in familiar terms, forms of worship conducted in an unfamiliar language and with unfamiliar vestments and processions.
